01 · QUESTION HACKS

MCQ & EMQ techniques

Try a technique, then use it in your next revision session.

MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS

A simple four-step method

  1. Read the whole question.Notice key words like first, most appropriate and except.
  2. Think before looking. If possible, predict what the answer might be.
  3. Compare every option.Cross out answers that don't fit the situation.
  4. Pick the best match.Do not assume the longest answer is correct.
EXTENDED MATCHING QUESTIONS

If your exam uses EMQs

  1. Read the instruction.Check whether options can be used once, more than once, or not at all.
  2. Scan the answer list.Notice similar terms you might confuse.
  3. Read one scenario at a time.Identify the key clue before choosing.
  4. Match and move on.Use a review feature only if your exam system allows it.

Question: Which response is the most appropriate first step when you don't understand an exam question?

A. Choose the longest answer immediately

B. Identify what the question is asking and check its key words

C. Skip reading the options altogether

Suggested answer: B. The words most appropriate and first help you narrow down the decision. This is a technique example, not a clinical exam question.

Important: Dental nursing qualifications don't all use the same assessment format. Check your own awarding body's current instructions for permitted materials, time limits and question types.

Most appropriate

The best choice for the specific situation, even when several answers sound plausible.

First / initial

What should happen before the other actions in the question.

Except / NOT

Look for the option that does not belong. Read slowly so you don't miss the negative wording.

Indication

A reason a treatment, action or investigation may be appropriate.

Contraindication

A reason a treatment or action may be unsuitable or should not be carried out.

Aseptic

Using methods designed to minimise contamination by microorganisms.

Cross-contamination

Transfer of microorganisms or contaminants between people, objects, equipment or surfaces.

Evaluate

Make a judgement using evidence, rather than just naming or describing something.

Justification

The reason an action is warranted after weighing the relevant information.

Sequence

The order in which the steps of a process happen.
